Radiation treatment for osteoarthritis
What does treatment involve?
Six treatments lasting 15 minutes given every other day
Are there side effects?
Side effects are minimal, but fatigue or skin irritation are possible.
How much pain relief can I expect?
Studies have shown 70 percent improvement in pain lasting up to 1-2 years.
Can radiation be repeated?
Yes, radiation can be repeated if the first round of radiation does not produce sufficient pain relief, or if pain recurs.
Can this replace injections, surgery, or medication?
Yes, radiation is an alternative to these treatments.
Can multiple joints be treated at the same time?
Yes, up to three joints can be treated simultaneously.
Who is eligible?
Patients over age 50 with documented history of osteoarthritis of the knees, hips, hands, shoulders, ankles, and/or elbows with pain lasting longer than three months.
Who is NOT eligible?
History of rheumatoid arthritis or joint replacement in the affected joint
